Frequently Asked
Questions

The Mulligan Concept is a manual therapy approach that focuses on improving movement and reducing pain through specific techniques and mobilizations. It emphasizes patient involvement and active participation in their recovery process.

The Mulligan Concept is a manual therapy approach developed by Brian Mulligan, a physiotherapist from New Zealand. It combines mobilization with movement (MWM) to treat musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. The technique involves the therapist applying sustained passive mobilization to a joint while the patient performs an active movement.

Key benefits of the Mulligan Concept include:

  • Immediate pain relief and improved movement
  • Non-invasive and pain-free application
  • Effective for conditions affecting the spine, joints, and extremities

It is widely used by physical therapists, occupational therapists, and chiropractors to help patients restore function and reduce pain quickly.

The Mulligan Concept benefits a wide range of individuals dealing with pain, stiffness, or movement limitations. It’s particularly effective for:

Patients With:

  • Joint pain & stiffness – arthritis, frozen shoulder, or post-injury restrictions
  • Sports injuries – sprains, strains, or mobility issues affecting performance
  • Chronic pain conditions – persistent back, neck, or joint pain
  • Post-surgical recovery – regaining movement after orthopedic procedures

Healthcare Professionals Who Use It:

  • Physical Therapists & Occupational Therapists – to improve patient mobility and function
  • Chiropractors – as part of a non-invasive pain relief plan
  • Athletic Trainers & Sports Therapists – to enhance recovery and prevent reinjury

By integrating joint mobilization with active movement, the Mulligan Concept helps people move more freely, with less pain, and often with immediate results.

You can learn the Mulligan Concept through hands-on courses hosted by InspireConEd. Our expert-led training covers mobilization techniques for the spine and extremities, with pathways to Certified Mulligan Practitioner (CMP) certification.
